It was not a startup idea. It was a problem at the till
The founder was a software engineer with an M.Sc. in Computer Science who started climbing in 2002, and worked out almost immediately that running a bouldering gym was the real ambition. In 2007 the right space turned up — huge, by the standards of the time. In 2008 the first Boulderkeskus opened in Helsinki.
Then came the till. An ordinary point-of-sale system sold things and did nothing else: no warehouse, no serial cards, no ticketing, no invoicing. Each of those existed. Each of those had a price tag.
You want a warehouse saldo? That is 369 € to open and 39 €/month to run. You want to do an inventory? That is another plugin. You would like to do invoicing? Well, you know the drill.
Nothing worth buying existed either. So with ten years of full-stack, database and web-shop work already behind it, the gym built its own — web-based from the first line, so it would scale to any number of gyms, customers, visits, locations and browsers.

First session on the wall
A software engineer starts climbing and decides, more or less on the spot, that a bouldering gym is the actual plan.
A room worth the rent
The right space turns up — huge, in that time's terms — and the plan stops being a plan.
First gym opens
The first gym opens in Helsinki. The till it runs on turns out to sell things and do nothing else.
Built behind the desk
Written by the person standing at that desk, and rewritten as the gyms running on it grew.
From day one to multi-million
The system has run businesses from their first morning to multi-million turnover and multi-site operations, and it left climbing a long time ago. It does a great deal, and the basics are still learnable on day one.

It has kept up, too. The interface is Vue 3, runs in any modern browser and adapts from a phone at the door to a full till on the desk. Screens update as the data changes rather than making you reload, improvements ship continuously, and older parts get rewritten as we go instead of left behind.

Answers
No queue number. Office hours are roughly 07:00–15:00 GMT, you are welcome to write outside them, and the reply usually arrives within a few minutes.
Listens
The things worth building come from the desk, so if you are thinking about a new feature, say so — that is how most of this got built in the first place. And a yes does not mean next year: features here are measured in days and weeks, not release cycles, and asking for one does not come with a quote attached.
Asks
Before we build, and again after. A feature nobody was asked about is a guess, and guesses end up as menu items nobody opens.
Support for growth is built in
One gym or many, it is the same system, with unlimited users, devices and gyms either way — so growing costs you nothing in seats. Multiple locations are part of it rather than an upgrade: separate tills, stock, staff rotas and door schedules per site, reported together or one at a time. It runs multi-company setups too, where distinct businesses keep their own books, stock and customers side by side. And if you would rather stay exactly the size you are, that costs nothing either.

GymKeeper is the product; Gymkeeper Oy is the Finnish company behind it. We have run a gym, done the inventory, chased the invoices and stood at the desk on a Saturday. This is not a group of engineers guessing at what a business needs.
